Poetry Corner | Poem#21: Milford Sounds

Milford Sounds

I had an epiphany whilst travelling, something of a question. Faced with the things I saw: the most awe-inspiring, remarkable, fantastical works of nature – how was I exactly to process all of this? I’m an atheist and I don’t believe in design, but I couldn’t really comprehend how something of such profound beauty and wonder – something like Milford Sound – could exist simply through chance and erosion and all of these other scientifically monitored and recorded processes.

I guess the only thing I could really cling onto was how it made me feel, and that was both insignificant and infinite. So thank you, Milford Sound, for the lesson of how to be humble. How to feel a part of everything, and simultaneously like nothing at all.
